Curator of Contemporary Histories

National Museums Liverpool is hiring a Curator of Contemporary Histories. The Curator of Contemporary Histories will directly report to the Lead Curator of Transatlantic Slavery. They will play an important role in coordinating collections management across the team and liaising across departments to ensure we are maintaining and developing high standards of collections management, particularly as part of the project decant.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Develop an individual and collective understanding of the contemporary legacies of racial slavery with a focus on one of the following themes: contemporary exploitation, racism, human rights, climate crisis, prison system

  • To continue reconciling and learning from past approaches to the post and managing collections in line with new thinking

  • Collaboratively develop display briefs for external design contractors to deadlines and work with them to develop designs and content, from initial concept through to detailed design

  • Explore opportunities to develop strategic partnerships with a community group or organisation that is aligned with the strategic focus of the role

  • Assist and contribute to planning and delivery of the widest possible access to the ISM collections through exhibitions, displays, loans, online and social media provision and outreach activities

  • To coordinate the management of collections across the team (accessioning, updating, logging changes), striving towards continuous improvement and implementation of best practices

  • Coordinate with the Waterfront Transformation Project Team on the decant of the International Slavery Museum and ensuring the International Slavery Museum Curatorial team are abreast of related responsibilities and tasks

  • To research and develop collections related to contemporary legacies of racial slavery. As well as manage historic collections associated with the past remit of this role (e.g. modern slavery collection, Anti-Slavery International collection).
